Continuing Education Credit Requirements

Requirements for school board continuing education are described primarily in a rule adopted by the State Board of Education. In addition, as elected officials, board members are required to receive open government training (pdf). Our Continuing Education Overview (pdf) provides a succinct summary of how many hours of training of each type each board member must complete.

Maintaining Records

The district is the official record keeper of board member continuing education credit information. In most districts, the superintendent or the superintendent's secretary performs this task. The data that TASB maintains through CECRS is a supplemental source of information designed to assist the district with its recordkeeping efforts, but should not serve as the distict's official record. TASB's Record Keeping Tips provide useful information about using the CECRS database and maintaining accurate records.

Reporting Compliance

School boards must report their compliance with training requirements annually. The president of the board must announce the training each member has completed or is lacking at the meeting in which the board normally calls school board elections. The board must also include a progress report of training received to date in the minutes of its last regular meeting of the calendar year.
