Religion in the Public Schools

Religion in the Public Schools imageryDistricts are provided seemingly contradictory advice on the topic of religion in the public schools. They cannot establish religion in schools, but they also cannot interfere with individuals’ free expression of their beliefs. Fortunately, legal authority exists to help districts effectively address the issues that may arise regarding religious expression in schools. TASB Legal Services has provided several resources to assist districts in applying these basic legal principles.

TASB Legal Services offers a Religion in the Public Schools DVD training program that answers pressing questions that the district may have regarding religious expression in the public schools. The DVD is available for purchase in the TASB store.  In addition, as part of the program, the division has published several free DVD materials.

The DVD was created in coordination with the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center. The First Amendment Center provides a significant amount of information on religion in schools.

The division has compiled a list of laws and policies relevant to the discussion. In addition, the division has compiled a list of TASB resources and resources published by other organizations that address the topic.
