Inside HR Services

Superintendent Survey had record high level of participation!

The 2008–09 TASB/TASA Superintendent Salary and Benefits Survey includes 867 school districts, an increase of 38 districts from last year. We have received lots of positive comments about our new online survey instrument. The latest survey data is now available in HR DataCentral. The printed survey report (pdf) will be available through MyTASB for subscribing districts or available for purchase in the TASB Store on Nov. 19. Thanks to everyone who took the time to participate in this important survey.

Let HR DataCentral help you review the superintendent’s contract

Most school boards review their superintendent’s job performance and compensation package in January. This year, HR DataCentral can help you to quickly create custom reports that compare salaries, benefits, or the total value of your superintendent’s compensation package with the districts that you choose. Choose your comparison group by region, district size, or customize your list and get all the details that you need. HR DataCentral is not included in the basic HR Services subscription but can be added for a small fee. Two hundred and twenty HR Services member districts have already added HR DataCentral to their HR Services subscription. Your district can be next!

Has your HR Services subscription expired?

There are still 120 districts that have not paid their annual subscription fee to HR Services. If you have not paid or contacted us about renewing your membership, your district’s access to MyTASB resources has been cut off. To restart your access, call Lysa Hoelscher, 800-580-7782.

Personnel Academy draws 120 administrators

The 18th annual TASB/TASPA Personnel Academy, held on Nov. 3 and 4, drew 120 HR administrators from across the state. Participants heard presentations from top-notch HR leaders, received a binder with extensive reference materials, networked with other districts, and played a fun game show, Who Wants to Be an HR Expert? Academy topics addressed the role of the HR department, contracts and nonrenewals, grievances, recruiting and hiring, personnel records, certification, compensation, and leaves and absences. Presenters included Jed Reed, Garland ISD; Chris Elizalde, Walsh, Anderson, P.C.; Bob Presley, Comal ISD; Tim Rocka, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD; and April Mabry, Mary Barrett, and Ronda Bauman from TASB HR Services. A sincere thank you goes to everyone who helped to make our 18th Personnel Academy a big success.

October Quick Poll results

Out of 136 poll participants, 80 percent replied that their district increased the beginning teacher salary this year. This result compares with 72 percent of the districts in our salary survey last year that left their starting teacher salary the same for 2007–08. If you have an idea for a Quick Poll topic, send it to us at hrservices@tasb.org.
