Cantu, Texas' Superintendent of the Year in 1994, served his entire 34-year career with Mission CISD as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He was an executive committee member of the Texas Association of School Administrators and the American Association of School Administrators. Cantu joined TASB in June 1995.

A Mission resident, Cantu earned his bachelor's degree at The University of Texas at Austin and his master's from Texas A&I University.
