Nancy Gonzales
Broadcast Journalist
Graduate of McCollum High School, San Antonio
San Antonio native Nancy Gonzalez was promoted to co-anchor of Good Morning San Antonio in March 2001 after being a reporter at San Antonio television station KSAT-12 for almost five years.
Gonzalez was raised on San Antonio’s South Side, graduating from Harlandale ISD’s McCollum High School. She graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia, where she majored in journalism and minored in Spanish.
Gonzalez anchored the morning and noon newscasts at her first television station job at KRGV-TV, the ABC affiliate in Weslaco.
“(Harlandale ISD) was not a wealthy school district, but the inspiration I received from my teachers and counselor meant more than all the fancy equipment money could buy. When I decided I would go to college and become the first in my family to go to college, I received nothing but encouragement. My counselor, Mrs. Pena, was my closest ally. My parents didn’t have the money to send me to college, but she saw to it that I applied for every scholarship and grant available to me.
“I remember I discovered my favorite class in my senior year. I got involved in theater arts. That experience is what finally brought me out of my shell and gave me more confidence to go into the career I was interested in—broadcast journalism.
“One of my greatest pleasures in life is going to schools, especially in the Harlandale district, to talk to kids about how they, too, can make their dreams come true, about how every child has a purpose. Every child matters, and I’m happy to say that my experience in elementary school, middle school, and high school in San Antonio made me realize my own importance.”
