(Austin) - Public schools are the heart of activity in thousands of Texas communities. The June 2010 issue of Texas Lone Star magazine looks at real stories of success happening on campuses across the state. Consider a few facts:
- Texas is the only state so far to meet five key college and career readiness measures.
- For the third time in eight years, a Texas district won the national Broad Prize for Urban Education.
- Eleven Texas schools ranked among the top 100 in the nation (two in the top 10) in a U.S. News & World Report, America's Best High Schools.
- Thirteen Texas districts were named the best in the country for music education.
And the stories are not just about statistics. One shows the compassion of English language learners in Harris County who helped Haitian earthquake victims as part of their community service project. Many of these students face serious financial challenges of their own. Learn more about real students, real teachers, and remarkable examples of success in our schools.
A publication of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), this annual special issue is mailed to education leaders, public libraries, and doctor and dentist offices statewide. TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve approximately 4.8 million public school students.
